About the service

What is Comet internet?

Comet Internet are part of the Telcom Group, who provide internet services across the UK. Comet manage free wireless internet connectivity in communities across the UK.

Working with Leeds City Council, Comet Internet have agreed a deal that will ensure all residents in your block can have free Wi-Fi access to the internet.

Why are Leeds City Council supporting this service?

More and more services, either from Leeds City Council or central government will soon only be available online. These include: benefits, pensions, tax payments and even local services like searching, applying for jobs or booking gym times.

Leeds City Council would like everyone in Leeds to have an opportunity to use the internet to access information, send personal messages, make on-line purchases and compete on-line forms. Working in partnership with Comet internet will make it easier for you to access council services including Housing Leeds and will have significant benefits to those with mobility issues or on low income who can’t easily travel to make a report or ask for help.

What is ‘Wi-Fi’?

Wi-Fi is a means by which you can connect computers, smartphones, or other devices to the Internet or communicate with one another wirelessly without the need to have wired connections installed in your home or having to plug your device in to a connection.

How much does it cost?

Comet Internet will be free to use, but you will need a suitable computer, tablet or smartphone to connect to the internet. You may already have internet capability on your phone or it may be possible to loan a device from Leeds libraries.

How can I get the free service?

How long is the free WiFi available for?

The WiFi will be free for an initial trial period of 18 months from [insert date]. Before the trial period ends, staff from Housing Leeds will talk to residents to understand how successful the trial has been and consider if a free service can be provided beyond this time.

Should I cancel the internet that I'm using?

This is entirely up to you. You may choose to run both services together so you can still use the internet on your smartphone when you are away from the block for example. If you choose to cancel the internet provider you currently have, you could be charged a cancellation fee, so please check this with your current provider. Comet Internet and Leeds City Council will not cover any charges made to you if you cancel your internet contract, or indeed if you choose to leave the free service and have to pay a new installation or reconnection charge to move to a new provider.
